Stage 1. Faulty Amalgam

Patient presented with back to back amalgam restorations in the upper first & second premolar that were showed on the x-ray to be close to the pulp.

Stage 2. Amalgam Removed

Rubber dam was placed before removal of the restorations to ensure a clean operating field in the case of any pulpal exposures. It was close but with proper excavation, the tooth vitality was preserved. However, the second premolar was severely affected making it's restorability questionable.

Stage 3. Let's measure it

The remaining base wall thickness is a great indicator for the restorations prognosis. Thickness was measured using a caliber passing the 1.5 mm mark.

Stage 4. Same thing for the other wall

Both walls passed the test and now we are good to go.

Stage 5. Side by side

The distal contact of the upper second premolar was first filled and then onto to the back to back class IIs.

Stage 6. Great contact & contour

Garrison rings & matrices were used to achieve the best results.

Stage 7. New is always better

Always happy to see such a difference & even happier when the patient symptoms are resolved.
